I think I use the word ‘purge’ more than any other word. It’s one of my favorite things to do in my home, and I love helping other people declutter + purge, when asked.*
*I’ve learned from experience it’s a terrible idea to “help” someone purge when they haven’t asked.
We do a big purge anytime we’re planning on moving, which as an Air Force family happens pretty frequently. I’ll also do “mini purges” of Hazel + Milo’s toys around birthdays or Christmas to make sure we aren’t drowning in kid things.
So I’ll get straight to it, here’s how I go through, sort, categorize, and sell the things we don’t need!
This step is usually a several day process. I walk through each room, assessing what’s in it, asking myself these questions when looking at an item/thing that I’m considering getting rid of.
Once I’ve decided to get rid of something, I dump it in one spot. Everything I’m getting rid of is going to go in this spot. Maybe “the dump spot” is in your garage or your basement. But whatever your want to leave your home – whether it’s to sell or to donate or to trash, it goes in “the dump.”
Now that you’ve gone through your home, decided what stays + what goes, you can sort it. I usually have 4 categories, but with this big moving purge I’m in the middle of right now, I’m adding a 5th category.
For the things that you’re selling, pricing is KEY. Unfortunately, people most likely aren’t going to pay what you think your stuff is worth. So be realistic when pricing things. It’s not the end of the world to price a little higher – you can always lower the price, but don’t be too stubborn that you refuse practical offers.
Then you’re just left with the STUFF still in your basement.
When’s the last time you purged??
Thanks for being here,
