I am a wannabe minimalist.
I used to throw that word around and call myself an actual ‘minimalist,’ but since watching the Minimalism documentary on Netflix, I don’t think I’ve actually earned the right to call myself one. So I’ll just call myself a wannabe minimalist for now.
When we found out I was pregnant with Hazel, it didn’t take long for the targeted ads on my phone to start shouting at me, “You need all of things for your baby to survive!!!” Not true. So, I set out to make the most out of our tiny space and to not overdo it with stuff. Now that we have two kids, I’ve really narrowed down to the necessities. Things we need, things we don’t. Things we love, things we don’t.
I’ve asked around. I’ve researched. I’ve read reviews. Here’s where I’ve landed. I’m hoping that my hours of research can save you some time.
Nursery: crib + crib Mattress, waterproof mattress cover, crib sheet(s), changing pad + sheets, baby monitor, swaddles (definitely optional but cute for that first hospital photo you’re going to post on insta), Halo sleep sack, white noise machine
Gear: car seat, stroller, baby carrier (ERGO + Wild Bird are my favorites), diaper bag (you can use any bag or large purse for this), Baby Bjorn Bounce
Clothing: sleepers (8), tops (6), bottoms (4), socks (one pack), bibs (wait and see how much spitting up your baby actually does), booties
Nursing: nursing tank (2 – makes using a nursing cover unnecessary), nursing bra (4), nipple balm, nursing pads (disposable at first, then reusable), burp cloths, Haakaa, breast pump
Hygiene: soap, lotion, diaper rash cream (Young Living is the best we’ve ever used), thermometer (anal is most accurate), Nose Frida, Nail Frida, diapers, wipes, bath support (either for sink or tub), comb
You can argue that some of these things aren’t necessary. And you’d be right. But these are the things that worked well for us!
At the beginning I was always so tempted to buy everything we needed BRAND NEW. Looking back, I wish I would have searched around more for second-hand buying options. Something I wouldn’t feel comfortable buying used (like a baby butt thermometer), but here are the things from the list that I’d recommend searching for second-hand:
Crib, changing pad, sleep sacks, baby monitor, white noise machine, stroller, baby carrier, diaper bag, bouncer, Haaka.
What are your baby must-haves??
